P/T Academic Advisor

Sussex County Community College is currently looking for a P/T Academic Advisor to perform general counseling/advising functions, including admissions and registration, academic planning and career counseling, transfer counseling and providing general college information.
1. Motivates, encourages and promotes student development and growth utilizing a wide variety of advising and counseling techniques. Promotes Academic Planning with advisees.
2. Conducts outreach and recommends a course of action to students experiencing academic difficulty, including, but not limited to students on academic probation and/or at risk; by providing support on student services topics and making proper referrals.
3. Participates and represents the Counseling and Advising Center at Open Houses, New Student Orientation and events.
4. Communicates and advocates on behalf of students to administrators, faculty and staff and promotes a strong focus on student success amongst students, faculty and staff.
5. Works collaboratively with members of the Counseling Advising Center staff.
6. Counsels new students and their parents/guardians regarding the admissions process and college and degree requirements.
7. Works with students as it pertains to degree completion, change of major, graduation requirements and transfer options.
Master's Degree in Counseling or related field.
One to 3 years' experience working in higher education, preferably in a community college setting. Experience helping new students transition into a college setting, and academic advising experience preferred.
Develop a working Knowledge of SCCC policies and procedures, academic requirements, campus resources and support services.
Ability to use online Advising Tools and systems.
Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, including minority and international students.
Interpersonal/human relations skills.
Ability to encourage and empower students to make their own decisions.
Ability to act as an advocate for both the student and the College.
Ability to identify students' needs for support services in order to make appropriate referrals.
Ability to operate a personal computer and various software packages.
Effective September 1, 2011, the NJ First Act requires that certain classifications of persons employed by a public higher education institution will have 365 days within which to establish a principle residence in NJ. Failure to comply will render the individual unqualified to continue to hold the position. Individuals may seek exemption from the residency exemption committee based on critical need or hardship.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
